What is a replacement support form and why would you need one?
A Replacement Support Form is used when you want to purchase an item that isn't typically funded by the NDIS but could serve as a substitute for an existing support in your plan. This process allows you to request approval to use your current NDIS funding to buy a different item that meets your disability-related needs.
When Might You Need One?
You might consider submitting a Replacement Support Form if:
You want to replace a current support with a more suitable item. For example, replacing a support worker's assistance with a smart device that enables you to perform tasks independently.
You're seeking to purchase an item from the NDIS "Out" list. Items like standard household appliances or certain smart devices aren't usually funded but may be approved as replacements if they meet specific criteria.
What Items Can Be Considered for Replacement?
The NDIS has identified specific categories of items that may be approved as replacement supports:
Standard commercially available household items (e.g., washing machines, dishwashers)
Smartwatches
Tablet devices
Smartphones
Apps for accessibility or communication purposes
These items must:
Replace an existing NDIS support in your plan
Cost the same or less than the support they're replacing
Provide the same or improved outcomes for your disability support needs

Need help filling out the form?
I can help you write a clear, strong explanation of why the item is reasonable and necessary, and guide you through every step of the Replacement Support process.
Whether it’s wording your request, attaching evidence, or knowing what to say – you don’t have to do it alone.
Reach out if you’d like support with your application! There is a small cost involved for preparing and submitting your Replacement Support Form. I generally charge approximately one hour of my time to complete this process thoroughly, including reviewing your answers, writing up your justification, and lodging the form with the NDIS.
